A breadboard end is not simply a decorative strip across the end of a tabletop. It is a long mortised cap fitted over a tongue worked along the panel’s end grain. Done properly, it helps keep the edge of a wide top from lifting or cupping while still allowing the field of the panel to move across its width with changes in humidity.
The important principle is simple: the centre of the joint may be fixed, but the outer portions must be allowed to slide. A tabletop expands and contracts across the grain, not appreciably along its length. If the end cap is glued or pegged rigidly across its full width, the wood has nowhere to go. In time, something may split, bow, or loosen.
This method uses hand tools where they give the clearest control: a saw and plane for the tongue, chisels for the mortise, and a brace or drill for the peg holes. It suits a glued-up solid-wood panel that has already been flattened and brought close to its final thickness.
Materials and preparation
You will need:
- A solid-wood tabletop panel, fully acclimatised to the room or workshop where it is being made.
- Straight-grained hardwood for the breadboard ends, preferably dry and stable, with enough thickness to finish flush with the top.
- Wooden pegs, usually riven or straight-grained stock rather than short-grained dowel.
- Hide glue or ordinary wood glue, used only where the joint is intended to be fixed.
- A marking gauge, square, knife, rule, chisels, mallet, tenon saw, router plane or shoulder plane, and a brace or drill.
- Clamps for assembly.
Make the breadboard end longer than the panel by a small, deliberate amount. It can be trimmed flush after fitting, but a slight even overhang is often traditional and gives the end cap room to be brought cleanly to the panel later.
Choose the face of the tabletop now and mark it discreetly. Work from that reference face whenever you lay out depth lines. A breadboard end that is fractionally proud underneath can be planed flush; one that sits low on the show face is harder to correct.

Decide the joint proportions
There are many sound variations, but a useful arrangement is a broad central tenon with shorter outer tenons separated by narrow gaps. The end cap receives corresponding mortises.
For a moderate tabletop, make the tongue roughly one-third of the panel thickness. Leave enough wood above and below it to keep the panel end strong. The breadboard end should be sufficiently wide to contain a substantial mortise and still leave solid material at its outer edge.
Avoid making a thin, fragile tongue merely to gain a deep mortise. The strength of the joint comes from broad, well-fitted bearing surfaces and sound shoulders, not from excessive depth.
The central tenon is the anchor. It locates the top and can be glued in the middle of the joint. The outer tenons serve chiefly as guides: they keep the end aligned while the panel moves beneath them. They are pegged through elongated holes in the tongue, not glued along their cheeks.
1. Flatten and square the panel end
Before cutting any joinery, plane the end of the tabletop square to its length and flat across its width. Check with a reliable square at several points, and use a straightedge to find local hollows.
This end forms the shoulder line against which the breadboard end will register. If it is hollow or out of square, the joint may close at the corners while leaving an unsightly gap in the middle.
It is sensible to make both breadboard ends from the same board when possible. Mark their show faces and their inside edges so their grain direction and colour remain coherent.
2. Lay out and cut the tabletop tongue
Mark the tongue depth on both faces of the tabletop with a cutting gauge. Knife the shoulder line across the end, then deepen it lightly with a chisel if needed. A knife line gives the saw a clean place to start and reduces torn fibres at the shoulder.
Saw down at the edges of the tongue, stopping at the gauge line. Then remove the waste from the top and underside in controlled passes with a rabbet plane, router plane, or chisel and plane. Work evenly from both faces so the tongue remains centred.
The broad tongue need not be a single uninterrupted rectangle. Mark out the sections that will become tenons. Saw narrow relief cuts between them and pare away the intervening tongue sections back to the shoulder. This produces separate tenons with gaps between, which makes the breadboard end easier to mortise and allows the outer portions to move independently.
Keep the central tenon generous. Outer tenons can be narrower, but should still have enough width to resist twisting and keep the end cap in line.
Test the tongue with a straightedge. Its cheeks should be flat and reasonably parallel, but do not obsess over a polished surface. A sound fit is one that bears firmly without forcing the breadboard end apart.
3. Mark and chop the mortises in the breadboard end
Place the breadboard end against the tabletop tongue and transfer the location of each tenon with a knife. Carry these marks across the inside face of the end cap with a square.
Set the mortise depth slightly deeper than the tongue length. This small clearance prevents the tenon ends from bottoming out before the shoulders close. Mark the mortise width from the actual tongue rather than trusting a measurement alone.
Chop each mortise with a sharp chisel, working from the inside face. Start a little in from each end of the mortise, then work back toward the lines. Remove waste in small increments and keep the walls square. For long mortises, drilling a row of shallow overlapping holes before chopping can reduce the heavy waste removal, provided the drill is held straight and clear of the layout lines.
A router plane is useful for bringing the mortise floors to a consistent depth. The side walls, however, are best judged by a careful trial fit.

4. Fit the joint without glue
Offer the breadboard end to the tabletop and press it home by hand at first. It should begin evenly. If it stops, do not drive it hard with a mallet. Find the high spots by checking burnished areas on the tenons or mortise walls, then pare only those places.
A good dry fit closes the shoulder line across the tabletop without a large gap and seats with firm but manageable pressure. The end cap should not be so tight that seasonal movement is prevented by friction alone.
Check the show face with a straightedge. A breadboard end is often left a fraction proud of the tabletop, especially if final smoothing remains to be done. What matters at this stage is that it does not pull the panel into a twist.
5. Bore the peg holes and drawbore carefully
Traditional breadboard ends are often drawbored: the hole in the tenon is offset slightly toward the shoulder from the hole bored through the end cap. When the peg is driven, it draws the joint snugly home.
Begin by boring the peg holes through the breadboard end while it is dry-fitted. Remove the end cap, then use the hole locations to mark the tenons. For the central tenon, a modest drawbore offset can be used because this portion is meant to close firmly and remain fixed.
For the outer tenons, make the peg holes in the tongue into short slots running across the tabletop’s width. The holes through the breadboard end remain round. The peg passes through the round hole and into the slot, holding the end cap down while allowing the tabletop to widen or narrow beneath it.
The slot need only provide movement in the cross-grain direction. Keep it neat, with rounded ends, and do not extend it so far that it weakens the tenon. A narrow chisel, file, or small rasp can lengthen the hole after boring.
Do not use an aggressive drawbore offset at the outer holes. The joint must be able to slide; forcing those pegs hard against one end of the slots defeats their purpose.
6. Glue only the centre and assemble
Apply glue only to the central tenon and its mortise. A small, controlled amount is enough. Keep glue well away from the outer tenons, mortises, and peg slots. Squeeze-out in these areas can quietly turn a moving joint into a fixed one.
Seat the breadboard end, using a block of scrap wood between mallet and work if taps are needed. Check that the shoulders close and that the end remains square to the panel.
Shape the pegs with a gentle taper and drive them into their holes. They should be firm, not brutal. If a peg demands excessive force, stop and investigate rather than risking a split in the end cap. Leave the pegs slightly proud until the glue has cured, then trim them with a flush-cut saw or chisel and pare them level.

7. Trim, plane, and finish the top
Once the centre glue has cured, trim the breadboard end’s overhang flush with the sides of the tabletop. Plane the faces carefully. Work from the end cap toward the tabletop edge where possible, and use a sharp plane with a fine cut to avoid tearing the contrasting grain at the joint.
Soften the edges with a small chamfer, roundover, or eased arris. A crisp but slightly softened edge is more durable in use than a sharp corner.
Finish both faces and all edges of the tabletop evenly. Finish slows the exchange of moisture but does not prevent it, so it is not a substitute for allowing movement in the joinery. The underside deserves the same attention as the top; an evenly finished panel is less likely to respond unevenly to changing conditions.
Mistakes to avoid
Gluing the whole breadboard end
This is the central error. A broad solid-wood panel must be allowed to move across its grain. Glue only the centre section, or use another carefully planned method of fixing the centre while leaving the rest free.
Using round holes in every tenon
Round holes at the outer pegs lock the panel to the end cap. Slot the holes in the outer tenons across the grain so the pegs can travel with seasonal change.
Making the fit too tight
A breadboard end should be neatly fitted, not wedged on with force. Excessive friction can restrain movement, split a mortise wall, or make assembly needlessly difficult.
Forgetting depth clearance
If the tenon bottoms out in the mortise, the shoulder will not close. Leave a little depth beyond the end of the tongue and test the dry fit before glue is introduced.
Assuming pegs can correct poor joinery
Pegs secure a well-made joint; they do not cure warped stock, ragged mortises, or shoulders that do not meet. Take time with the dry fit. The quiet accuracy of the shoulder line is what makes the finished end look settled and intentional.
A breadboard end is a small lesson in working with wood rather than commanding it. The end cap gives the tabletop order at its edge, while the pegged outer tenons leave room for the panel’s slow, ordinary movement through the seasons.
