How to Raise a Solid Wood Panel with Hand Planes

A hand-raised panel is not difficult because it requires unusual tools. It is difficult because several small relationships must remain true at once: the visible field must stay calm and flat, the bevel must run evenly, the tongue must fit the frame groove, and the whole panel must still be free to move with changes in humidity.

The work is best approached as controlled removal. Rather than trying to plane a finished profile in one pass, mark the boundaries clearly, establish a few reliable surfaces, and work toward them gradually. A jack or jointer plane does most of the shaping. A shoulder plane and cabinet scraper bring the fit and surface into order.

Tools, stock, and preparation

Prepare the panel before raising it. If the panel is made from several boards, joint and glue it first, then allow the glue to cure fully. Flatten both faces, bring the panel to final thickness, and square its edges. A raised panel is much easier to lay out on stock that is already true.

Choose wood that is reasonably straight-grained and dry enough for indoor work. Boards with dramatic grain can make a handsome panel, but reversing grain around a broad bevel demands more scraping and careful planing. If possible, arrange the boards so the grain flows agreeably across the face.

You will need:

  • A jack plane or jointer plane with a sharp iron; a lightly cambered iron is useful for early stock removal.
  • A smoother plane, if available, for refining the field and bevels.
  • A shoulder plane for tuning the tongue and cleaning the corners where bevels meet it.
  • A marking gauge, preferably one that holds a setting reliably.
  • A try square and a straightedge.
  • A cabinet scraper, sharpened and ready for delicate grain.
  • A pencil, winding sticks if the panel is wide, and a stable bench arrangement.

The frame should be made far enough along that you know the groove dimensions. Ideally, plough the frame grooves and make a short offcut with the same groove before raising the entire panel. That sample groove is a quiet but valuable guide: the tongue should enter it comfortably without being loose enough to rattle.

Understand the parts of the panel

A traditional raised panel has four useful areas:

  1. The field is the broad, central face left at or near the original panel thickness.
  2. The bevel slopes down from the field toward the edge.
  3. The tongue is the thin margin at the perimeter that enters the frame groove.
  4. The back shoulder is the step between the back face and the tongue. It controls how the panel sits within the frame.

The front bevel is the visible feature, but the tongue is the fitting feature. If the tongue is too thick, the panel will not seat. If it is too thin, it may sit loosely or reveal an uneven gap. If it is made tight all around, seasonal expansion can split the frame or buckle the panel.

The panel must float. It is held in the frame grooves, but it is not glued around its perimeter. Its greatest movement occurs across the grain, not along it. A wide panel with grain running horizontally will change most in width, affecting the stiles more than the rails. Leave clearance in the groove in the direction of expected movement, and avoid any finish buildup on the tongue that would make the fit needlessly tight.

1. Lay out the field and tongue

Decide the width of the raised field first. A broad field usually looks quieter and gives the bevel room to read as a shallow plane rather than a narrow strip. Mark a line around the front face to define it. Use a marking gauge set from the panel edge, or measure and mark with a rule before connecting the lines carefully.

Next, set the tongue thickness from the actual frame groove. Gauge this line around the back face. The tongue need not be a forced fit: aim for a smooth entry into the sample groove with a little freedom for movement.

Then mark the depth of the tongue on the edges. This indicates where the front bevel must stop. It is useful to darken all layout lines with pencil. Plane work can make a fine gauge line hard to see, especially in reflective grain.

Check the layout with a try square. The field lines should be parallel to the panel edges, and the tongue line should be consistent around the full perimeter. An uneven field is conspicuous once the panel is assembled, even if the door itself is square.

2. Set the grain direction before planing

Look at the grain on each side of the panel. The safest planing direction is generally uphill along the grain, so the plane iron cuts into rising fibers rather than lifting them ahead of the cut. On a glued panel, neighboring boards may ask for different directions. Work the agreeable portions with the plane and use a scraper where the grain reverses.

Begin with a sharp blade and a modest cut. A deep cut removes material quickly but makes it easier to tear out a corner, dip below a layout line, or leave a hollow that must later be corrected. The bevel is broad enough that patient strokes are usually more efficient than repairs.

3. Plane the first bevels

Start on an end grain edge or on the least prominent edge of the panel. This gives you a place to establish the method before working the show edges.

Hold the plane at an angle across the work rather than straight along the edge. This skewed stroke lowers the effective cutting angle and makes a broad, controlled cut. Begin just outside the field line and plane down toward the tongue line, stopping short of both marks at first.

The aim is not yet a finished bevel. Establish a flat sloping facet. Check it with a straightedge laid across the slope. If the facet is hollow, the edges of the bevel will appear heavy while the center fades away. If it is crowned, the panel may look swollen. A single clean plane surface is the desired result.

Work each edge in stages. On the long-grain edges, full or near-full strokes may be possible. On end grain edges, use a very sharp plane, take light cuts, and skew the plane strongly. Plane from each end toward the middle if necessary to avoid breaking out the far corner.

Leave the tongue slightly heavy at this stage. It is easier to reduce it accurately later than to restore thickness once it has been removed.

4. Keep the corners orderly

As the bevels approach one another, the corners require deliberate attention. Do not chase a sharp point at the corner immediately. Instead, bring each bevel nearly to its lines, then refine their meeting with short, careful strokes.

A shoulder plane is useful here because it can work close to the tongue and clean the narrow transition without its body riding too far onto the raised field. Keep checking that the field remains the same width on all four sides. A pencil line and a try square will reveal whether one bevel has crept inward.

For a panel with strongly figured wood, a cabinet scraper may be safer than a plane near the corners and on difficult sections of bevel. Use it to remove fine irregularities, not to substitute for flatness. A scraper follows a hollow readily if used without a reference, so first establish the broad form with the plane.

5. Fit the tongue to the groove

Test the panel in the sample groove or, with care, in the actual frame. Do not force it. If it binds, look for shiny compression marks or areas where the tongue has not entered fully. Remove a little material only from those areas.

Use the shoulder plane to tune the tongue thickness. Take light, even passes and check often. Keep the tongue parallel to the panel faces; a tongue that is thin at the outer edge but thick near the shoulder may enter the groove reluctantly and prevent the panel from seating.

Also check the back shoulder. When the tongue is in the groove, the back of the panel should sit as intended relative to the back of the frame. If the shoulder is uneven, the panel can twist or leave an irregular reveal. Pare or plane only enough to correct the seating.

The panel should slide into place without force. It should not be so loose that it clacks in a dry room, but a little side-to-side clearance across the grain is necessary. The frame is the restraint; the panel is the moving part.

6. Refine the field and bevels

Once the fit is correct, make the final surfaces. Plane the field only if it needs further smoothing or if planing the bevels has disturbed it. Keep it flat. The raised field catches light differently from the bevel, and a slight hollow is often visible in raking light.

Refine the bevel with a sharp smoother or cabinet scraper. Work along the grain where possible. Take particular care at the transition from field to bevel: it should be a crisp change of plane, not a rounded trough. The same is true at the tongue. A clean arris gives the panel its definition.

A few faint plane marks are not necessarily a fault if they are even and intentional. For a painted panel, the surface can be smoothed further, but avoid rounding the edges in the pursuit of a polished appearance. For a clear finish, scrape difficult grain lightly, then sand only as much as needed to remove raised fibers. Heavy sanding can soften the profile that took time to establish.

7. Finish and assemble without trapping the panel

Finish the panel before assembly when practical, especially if it will receive a clear finish. This reduces the chance that unfinished wood will later appear at the edges when the panel contracts in a dry season. Apply finish lightly to the tongue; thick finish there can turn a good fit into a tight one.

Do not glue the panel into the frame grooves. Glue the mortise-and-tenon joints of the frame, but let the panel remain free. Depending on the door construction, small space balls, cork strips, or other gentle spacers may be used in the grooves to keep the panel centered without immobilizing it. Any spacer should compress or allow movement rather than grip the panel rigidly.

Before the frame glue-up, dry assemble everything. Confirm that the panel enters the grooves, that its field is centered as intended, and that it can move slightly in the direction across its grain. A dry fit is the time to correct a tight tongue; after the frame is glued, access is limited.

Mistakes to avoid

Making the tongue fit tightly on every side

A panel that needs tapping into its grooves is too tight. It may appear sound at assembly and fail later when humidity changes. Leave appropriate clearance across the grain and keep the panel unglued in its frame.

Planing the bevel before marking both faces

Without a clear back-side tongue line, it is easy to remove too much material or create a tongue that varies in thickness. Mark the field, tongue, and edge depth before substantial planing begins.

Relying on the plane alone in wild grain

A sharp plane remains the primary tool, but stubborn grain can tear even under a fine setting. Change direction, skew the plane, reduce the cut, or use a cabinet scraper for the troublesome area.

Correcting an uneven bevel by sanding

Sandpaper can disguise scratches but rarely restores a true plane. If the bevel is hollow or twisted, return to the hand plane and use a straightedge to guide the correction. Scrape and sand only after the shape is right.

Forgetting the back shoulder

The front face receives attention because it is visible, but the back shoulder determines how the panel sits in the frame. Check it during dry fitting, not after finishing.

A raised panel made with hand planes carries a modest clarity: broad surfaces meet at deliberate lines, and the frame holds the panel without denying the wood its movement. When the layout is accurate and the tongue is fitted with patience, the work does not need ornament to feel complete.
