How to Build a Traditional Sawbench for Hand-Sawing

A traditional sawbench is a small piece of workshop furniture with a large practical purpose: it holds timber low, firmly, and within reach of the saw. It is especially useful when working alone. Instead of balancing a board on trestles, kneeling over it on the floor, or trying to manage a long cut at bench height, you can brace the work beneath one foot and saw with a relaxed stance.

The form is plain: a stout top, a pair of splayed legs at each end, and a shallow V-shaped notch cut into one long edge. The notch catches narrow boards during ripping. The broad top supports stock during crosscuts. The low height lets you put controlled downward pressure on the work without climbing onto the furniture or forcing your shoulders upward.

The bench described here is deliberately simple. It can be made from sound construction lumber, reclaimed boards, or hardwood offcuts. Screws or cut nails are suitable. The important qualities are stiffness, a broad stance, and a top that will tolerate saw kerfs.

A useful size for a general sawbench

For most hand-tool work, make the top about 36 inches long, 10 to 12 inches wide, and 1 1/2 to 2 inches thick. A finished height of roughly 18 to 20 inches suits many adults. It is low enough to brace a board with your foot, yet high enough to keep you from spending the day bent double.

There is no sacred measurement. If you are tall, work with unusually wide boards, or expect to use the bench mostly for ripping, you may prefer a slightly longer or taller version. Before cutting parts, stack a few offcuts to the proposed height and try the position with a board and saw. You should be able to stand with one foot on the work, your knee slightly bent, and your sawing arm moving freely.

A sound starting arrangement is:

  • Top: 36 inches long by 11 inches wide by 1 1/2 inches thick.
  • Legs: four pieces about 16 1/2 inches long, allowing for the thickness of the top.
  • Leg stock: 1 1/2 inches thick and 3 to 4 inches wide.
  • Lower stretchers: two pieces between each pair of legs, if the timber is narrow or the bench will see hard use.
  • Notch: a V or open-sided notch about 2 inches deep, centred along one long edge of the top.

The finished bench need not be elegant, but it should sit without rocking. A sawbench is often moved by one hand, stood upon briefly while arranging stock, and subjected to sideways pressure from a vigorous rip cut. Give it a wide enough footprint to remain calm under those forces.

Materials and tools

Choose dry, straight boards without deep splits, loose knots, or severe twist. Softwood is entirely serviceable for a first sawbench. Hardwood makes a more durable top but is not essential. A top made from two or three boards edge-glued together is fine, provided the glue joint is sound and the finished panel is flattened.

  • Two optional stretcher boards
  • Wood screws or cut nails
  • Wood glue
  • Finish oil or wax, if desired

Tools

  • Panel saw or tenon saw
  • Marking gauge, pencil, square, and rule
  • Drill and bits for pilot holes and countersinks
  • Chisels and mallet, if making housed or mortised joints
  • Block plane or smoothing plane
  • Clamps
  • Rasp or file for softening edges

A plain screwed construction is quick and reliable. If you prefer a more traditional approach, you can house the legs into shallow recesses on the underside of the top and reinforce them with glue and cut nails. The bench does not require elaborate joinery, but it benefits from joinery that resists racking.

Prepare the top and lay out the legs

Start with the top. Plane or sand away rough splinters, but do not chase a furniture-grade finish. The upper face should be reasonably flat so boards sit without rocking. Keep the underside fair enough for the legs to register cleanly.

Mark a centreline along the underside. Set each pair of legs about 4 to 5 inches in from the ends. This leaves enough overhang at either end to support a board while keeping the leg pairs widely spaced.

The legs should splay outward along the length of the bench and, if possible, a little across its width. Even a modest splay greatly improves stability. A simple approach is to angle each leg about 10 degrees away from vertical when viewed from the end. The exact angle matters less than making the opposing legs match.

You can form the leg tops in two ways:

  1. Square-ended legs with screwed cleats. Keep the legs square, fasten a cross cleat beneath the top at each end, and screw the legs to the cleat. This is straightforward and lets the legs splay in the long direction.
  2. Angled leg shoulders. Cut the upper ends of the legs to meet the underside of the top at their chosen angle. Glue and fasten them directly to the top, preferably with a shallow housed recess to stop them sliding.

The first method is often easier with limited tools. The second produces a cleaner, more integrated bench. In either case, dry-fit every part before committing to glue or fasteners.

Cut the notch before assembly

The notch is one of the quiet virtues of a traditional sawbench. When ripping a narrow board, place its far end in the open notch and stand on the near portion of the board. The notch stops the stock from skittering sideways while the saw follows the line.

Lay out the notch on one long edge of the top. A broad V, roughly 3 to 4 inches wide at the edge and 2 inches deep, works well. Avoid making it too narrow. Your work will include boards of different widths, and a generous opening is more useful than a tight slot.

Saw down the two angled lines, then remove the waste with a coping saw, chisel, or a series of relief cuts. Clean the inside faces with a rasp or chisel. Slightly round the edges of the notch so they do not bruise the timber you are holding.

Some sawbenches use a square-sided open notch instead of a V. Either form works. The V is forgiving when the board is not perfectly aligned, while a square notch gives a more positive shoulder for certain cuts. For a first bench, the V is simple and versatile.

Assemble the base

1. Make the two leg assemblies

Pair the legs at each end of the bench. If using stretchers, fit one low stretcher between each pair, about 4 to 6 inches above the floor. The stretcher may be housed into shallow notches in the legs, screwed between them, or nailed through from the outside.

Keep the lower ends of the legs wider apart than the upper ends. Check that both assemblies have the same spread. Set them on a flat surface and compare their height before fastening anything permanently.

2. Add cleats or cut shallow housings

For cleat construction, screw a stout cleat across the underside of the top at each leg position. Let the cleat run across the width of the top. It gives the legs a broad surface to bear against and reduces strain on the screws.

For direct leg attachment, mark the leg positions on the underside and cut shallow housings with a chisel. A recess only a few millimetres deep is enough to locate each leg. The housing need not be pretty; its job is to prevent the leg from creeping outward under use.

3. Fasten the legs to the top

Turn the top upside down on a flat surface. Position the leg assemblies, checking that their splay is even and that the bench will stand squarely when turned over.

Apply glue where wood meets wood if you are using it. Drill pilot holes before driving screws, particularly near board ends. Two substantial screws through each leg or cleat connection are usually more dependable than one large screw. Countersink the heads so they do not catch on clothing or scratch other work.

Cut nails are also appropriate, especially when used with glue and a housed joint. Bore pilot holes in hardwood or dry softwood to reduce splitting. Drive nails carefully and clinch them only where the construction allows; unnecessary clinching can complicate future repairs.

4. Test for racking

Turn the bench upright on a level floor. Press each corner in turn. If it rocks, identify whether one leg is long or whether the floor is uneven. Trim a long leg gradually with a plane or saw; do not remove material from several legs at random.

Then grip the top and push it side to side. A small amount of movement in a light softwood bench is not unusual, but obvious racking calls for reinforcement. Add lower stretchers, diagonal braces beneath the top, or a stout crosspiece joining the leg pairs.

Shape the edges and finish lightly

Ease all exposed edges with a block plane, rasp, or sandpaper. The corners of the top deserve attention, as your hands and shins will meet them often. Do not round the top excessively: a slightly crisp edge is useful for registering a square or holding a board against the side.

A finish is optional. A coat of drying oil or a thin wax finish helps the bench resist workshop grime and makes glue drips easier to remove. Keep the finish modest. A slick, heavy film is unnecessary on a surface intended to grip timber and accept accidental saw marks.

Let any finish cure thoroughly before using the bench. Oily finishing rags can heat as they dry, so lay them flat to dry safely outdoors or store them in a suitable sealed metal container according to the finish maker’s directions.

How to use the sawbench well

For a crosscut, lay the board across the top with the cut line just beyond the far edge. Stand on the near end of the board, keeping your foot well away from the saw line. Support the offcut if it is long or heavy so it cannot break away and tear fibres near the end of the cut.

For a rip cut, run the board along the bench and engage its far end in the notch. Stand on the near end with measured pressure. The board should be held down firmly but not crushed against the bench. Shift your foot and body as the cut progresses rather than reaching awkwardly forward.

Keep the saw path clear of screws, nails, and the main body of the bench. A sawbench top is expected to acquire shallow kerfs over time. It is not meant to be sacrificed to deep cuts. Aim to let the blade pass just beyond an edge or into a replaceable sacrificial strip when possible.

Mistakes worth avoiding

Making the bench too tall

A high bench encourages raised shoulders and makes it difficult to pin a board underfoot. If in doubt, make the bench slightly low. You can add thin pads beneath the feet later, but shortening a tall bench changes the leg geometry.

Using narrow, vertical legs

Straight legs with a small footprint make a bench that feels nervous during ripping. Splayed legs and low stretchers are more valuable than decorative details.

Cutting an undersized notch

A narrow slot only works for one board thickness or one particular task. Leave the notch broad and open enough to accept rough, slightly twisted stock.

Relying on screws without pilot holes

Heavy screws driven into dry wood near an edge can split the leg or top. Pilot holes take little time and make the fastening more dependable.

Standing carelessly on unstable stock

The bench holds work well, but it does not remove the need for attention. Keep your footing secure, avoid standing on short offcuts or bowed boards, and never place a foot where a slipping saw could reach it.

A well-made traditional sawbench becomes marked and softened by use: shallow kerfs along the edge, darker places where hands have rested, perhaps a replaced stretcher years later. Its value is not in remaining untouched. It is in making the next length of timber quieter, steadier, and easier to cut.
